GOAL MILE ON CHRISTMAS DAY
GOAL MILE ON CHRISTMAS DAY
The third world charity GOAL will host a series of “Goal Miles” throughout Ireland on Christmas Day, and Carrick-on-Suir will again be one of the venues this year. First held in 2007, the Carrick event has quickly become one of the most successful in the country, raising a staggering €7,000 in its first year and over €8000 last year. Huge credit for the success of the event must go to Margaret Power and her team from the Carrick Road Runners Club, who organise not just the race on Christmas Day but the vitally important street collection on Christmas Eve.
It is important to note that the Goal Mile is not a real race as such as there are no prizes, but it is all about participation. Some run, some jog, but a large number just walk around the one mile route, with many families taking part and just enjoy a leisurely stroll through the streets of Carrick. The race starts at the Ormonde Castle at 11.00, and participants are asked to make a donation before setting off on a route that takes them up the Main Street, out the West Gate and straight on to the Davin Park where they will turn left onto the Quay. Then it’s back down the Quay to the New Bridge where they turn left and left again, back to the finish on Main Street.
The generosity of the people of Carrick and the surrounding areas has been amazing the last two years, so hopefully despite the recession they will again dig deep in their pockets to support the famous GOAL charity, who work with and support the poorest of the poor throughout the Third World. So why not come along on Christmas morning, get some light exercise before the Christmas dinner and at the same time do your bit to help out those who are less well off than ourselves.
