AutoPower Rathgormack '5'
The 2011 Outfield Sports Three-Counties Challenge came to an exciting conclusion in Rathgormack on Friday evening last with the running of the popular AutoPower-sponsored 5-mile road race. This fourth and final race in the series saw a turnout of 120 runners line up in perfect running conditions. There was no doubt that Brian Murphy of Carrick AC was the pre-race favourite, having won two of the three earlier races. Brian duly lived up to the favourite's tag with another powerful winning performance, clocking a time of 26:26. Not only did Brian secure the race victory, but he also retained the overall title for the series which he had won for the first time in 2010. No doubt Brian will be back next year to attempt the hat-trick of wins.
Brian was followed home in Friday's race by Niall Sheil (St. Killian's) in 27:12 and third prize went to the very consistent Martin Keane (Dundrum AC) in 28:05. Carrick AC's Pat O' Sullivan and Brendan Cronin secured victories in the men's O/45 and O/50 categories. Carrick AC also took the team prize with Patrick Roche, David Waters and Michael O' Connell all running fine races.
There was a close finish to the ladies' race as Margaret Danagher (Templemore AC) held off Maria McCarthy with Aine Roche (Clonmel AC) in third place. The ladies' team prize went to the
Carrick AC would like to thank all who helped in organising this year's race and making it such a success. Thanks to all who undertook stewarding duties and helped with race registration and results. Special thanks to Finola Walsh and the Carrick-on-Suir Red Cross team who assisted at all of this year's races.
The club is very grateful to AutoPower for their continued sponsorship of this race and to Outfield Sports for sponsoring the overall series. The hard-working Carrick AC race committee deserve a special mention for the organisation of all four races. They can now take a well-deserved but short break before the commencement of the autumn mile series next month.
