Champion Kiely Ballyneale 5K

The Champion Kiely Ballyneale 5K, sponsored by Mr. Binman, took place on Friday evening last with a record entry of 211 athletes. This was the second race in the 2011 Outfield Sports Three-Counties Challenge. On an ideal evening for running and on a very fast, flat 5K course, conditions were perfect for fast times. The men's race saw a very exciting tussle upfront between Sergiu Ciobanu (Clonliffe Harriers) and Andrew Ledwith (Fr. Murphy's). Sergiu had the lead at the 4km point, but Andrew came with a perfectly-jundged burst to sweep past and establish a winning lead inside the last kilometre. The standard of competition can be judged by Andrew's impressive winning time of 14:49 and Sergiu's 15:04. In third place came Dzintars Klava (West Waterford) in 15:52 ahead of Pedro Calvo (Unatt) in 16:08. Dwayne Farrell (Tinryland) took the fifth prize in 16:14.

Carrick AC's runners were led home by Pat O'Sullivan who finished eighth overall and won the O-45 category with a fine run, clocking 16:24. Carrick AC also took the team prize with David Waters (11th), Tommy Falconer (17th) and Patrick Roche (19th) all putting in excellent performances.

The ladies' race was won in fine style by Siobhan O'Doherty (Borrisokane) in 17:20, with Angela McCann (Clonmel) second in 17:50 and Carrick AC's Martina O'Dwyer third in 18:02. Carrick AC's second lady home was Nanette O'Connell in 21:53.

Carrick AC would like to thank all who helped to organise this year's race, our most successful yet. Thanks to the many stewards who ensured the race was run safely, to the Carrick on Suir Red Cross for their assistance and to Noel and Mary Kenny for the much appreciated refreshments after the race. The club is especially grateful to Mr. Binman for the sponsorship of this race. Well Done to Cornelius McFadden and Jim St.John for all their hard work in the weeks beforehand. Finally, it was fantastic to hear Catherina Mc Kiernan speak at the presentation of prizes, an honour for which all in the club are very grateful.

The third race in this year's series will be the MorrisOil.ie Piltown 10K on Friday July 15th at 7.30p.m. Registration for this race will take place at Piltown GAA Club from 6 pm and the race will start at Kildalton College, Piltown.
