Carrick Road Runners Athletic Club Notes 17th November 2008

It was great to see the club once again fielding a team in the Novice B Cross Country on Sunday last. All of the lads who are running well in the Super-Valu Winter League at present left nothing behind when it came o the crunch. Mikey O'Loughlin finished 11th, Tommy Falconer crossed the line in 13th position while James Fox was 15th overall. Well done to the boys and hard luck on narrowly missing out on a bronze team medal.

More Marathon Updates
2 more Carrick AC marathoners deserve a big mention having recently completed the New York Marathon in some style just the weekend before last. Two of Ballyneale's finest in the shape of marathon debutant Andrew Downey and seasoned campaigner Cornelius McFadden both put in superb performances with excellent times to show for their efforts. Cornelius has consistently put in some of the club's fastest marathon performances and New York was to be no different when he finished in a time of 3:09:36. Andrew Downey showed that all the hard work he has put in over the past year in the Winter League and the 3 Counties Series really paid off when he completed the distance in a brilliant 3:53:43. Well done to the Ballyneale boys!

Flag Day
The annual club Flag-Day will take place this coming Saturday 22nd November at locations right across the town from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. We need at least 40 volunteers to enable the smooth running of this club fund raiser. We appeal to each member to volunteer an hour or two next Saturday for the good of the club. If you can spare some time please contact Shirley O'Shea or any committee member. A big thank you to Shirley for once again organising the flag day.

Super-Valu Winter League
We have 5 competitive weeks under the belts in this year's Super-Valu Winter League. It is great to see many of the 2.5k athletes moving up to the full 5k event after only a couple of weeks at the shorter distance. This year there is no competitive 2.5k so we do encourage as many to register for the 5k as possible. It is far too early to tell how the league is going but there are one or two names that have been prominent each week thus far. Remember the league tables will be out on the first Tuesday in December so all runners can chart their progress for the remainder of the league. There will be just two changes to format for the 2 races in December. Tuesday 2nd December will be 'Predict your Time' while Tuesday 9th December will be our last league before Christmas and will be our traditional charity-mass start event, with ALL runners off at 7 p.m. sharp.

New members are welcome each week. Entry fee is €2 if you are a member of an athletics club, €5 if you are a non member. All runners can avail of the cheaper entry rate by joining the club today! Details available at registration each week.

The league takes place at Kildalton College, Piltown with registration from 6:30 p.m. each Tuesday and first runner of at 7 p.m. sharp. There is only one pre requisite for every runner- ALL ATHLETES MUST WEAR A HIGH VIZ VEST. Any runner without a vest will not be allowed start so please save yourself and the organisers unnecessary embarrassment by wearing a reflective vest - it is for all of our safety. Runners must also wear the same number each week.

Thanks to our sponsors Super-Valu, Carrick-on-Suir and to Kildalton College, Piltown for their continued support of the Winter League.

GOAL Mile
Christmas Day 2007 saw the inaugural GOAL Mile in Carrick. Thanks to Mags and Bobby Power, with the help of club members this event was a great success and because of the generosity of local people a grand total of over €7000 was raised for this very worthy cause. The GOAL Mile will again take place this Christmas Day at 11 a.m. from the Ormonde Castle. It finishes on the Main Street. This is great, energetic way to kick off your Christmas and raise vitally needed funds for charity in the process. All are welcome. There is no upper or lower age limit, you don't have to be a club member, in fact you don't even have to be a runner as you can walk, jog, crawl whatever mode gets you through the 1 mile distance! Come along and enjoy the fun-more details on the GOAL Mile will be available over the coming weeks.

Club Membership
2009 annual club membership is now due for both new and existing members and for a mere €30 you can join one of the fastest growing clubs in the area and enjoy all the benefits that membership has to offer. Registration forms are available each Tuesday night at the Super Valu Winter League, alternatively contact club registrar Barbara Cooke or any committee member.
