Carrick Road Runners Athletic Club, Co. Tipperary, Ireland

Carrick Road Runners Athletic Club Notes 3rd November 2008

Spring and Autumn are traditionally marathon time in the athletics calendar and the club recently had members competing in not only Dublin but also the New York marathon. First up was Dublin on the October Bank Holiday last when 7 club athletes travelled up to the capital to join 12000 other like minded lunatics for the 26.2 miles. All of our runners acquitted themselves extremely well. It was a fine October morning but a stiff breeze did not make the going any easier particularly over the last 4 miles. There were two marathon debutants in the shape of Bobby Power and John Nolan. For the other 5 it was not their first marathon and there were a number of PB's posted.

There were great runs from Johnny Brunnock and Paddy Kerwick who both achieved their pre race targets. John Nolan also had a great outing in his first time over the distance while also raising money for charity. Mags Power proved once again that she is one of the top ladies in her age category in these parts by posting a superb marathon time while husband Bobby who traded in the wheels for the trainers really blazed a trail around the streets of Dublin! One of the clubs most dedicated athletes Geraldine Lynch also had a superb run and demonstrated why she is the club's most consistent performer. Congratulations to Mick O'Shea on another vintage performance.

Well done to all concerned and also to the travelling support. Here is how the  Carrick-on-Suir AC athletes finished: 243. Johnny Brunnock-2:59:58; 938. Paddy Kerwick-3:24:03; 1319. John Nolan-3:29:42; 3775. Mags Power-4:00:22; 3779. Bobby Power-4:00:22; 5353. Geraldine Lynch-4:23:35; 5783. Mick O'Shea-4:30:34.

New York
Having earned his stripes in Dublin over the past few years and having trained extremely diligently over the summer Edmund Wells was the club's one and only representative in the New York Marathon on Sunday last. Ebbie joined 40000 other athletes in what is without doubt one of the world's great city marathon's. He certainly savoured the experience but Ebbie was not just there to make up the numbers as he finished in a great time of 3:56:10.

Well done Ebbie for flying the club colours on distant shores-you did us all proud!

Super-Valu Winter League
Without a shadow of a doubt the Super-Valu Winter League is now really swinging into action! We have 3 competitive weeks under the belts. There were many improvers between weeks 1 and 2 with a little less between weeks 2 and 3 as people start to find their pace and their group. It is great to see many of the 2.5k athletes moving up to the full 5k event after only a couple of weeks at the shorter distance. This year there is no competitive 2.5k so we do encourage as many to register for the 5k as possible. It is far too early to tell how the league is going but there are one or two names that have been prominent each week thus far. Remember the league tables will be out in December so all runners can chart their progress for the remainder of the league.

New members are welcome each week. Entry fee is €2 if you are a member of an athletics club, €5 if you are a non member and there is a €5 non refundable number deposit on the first week of registration. All runners can avail of the cheaper entry rate by joining the club today! Details available at registration each week.

The league takes place at Kildalton College, Piltown with registration from 6:30 p.m. each Tuesday and first runner of at 7 p.m. sharp. There is only one pre requisite for every runner-ALL ATHLETES MUST WEAR A HIGH VIZ VEST. Any runner without a vest will not be allowed start so please save yourself and the organisers unnecessary embarrassment by wearing a reflective vest-it is for all of our safety. Runners must also wear the same number each week.

Club Membership
2009 annual club membership is now due for both new and existing members and for a mere €30 you can join one of the fastest growing clubs in the area and enjoy all the benefits that membership has to offer. Registration forms are available each Tuesday night at the Super Valu Winter League, alternatively contact club registrar Barbara Cooke or any committee member.
