Sunday 14th June 2009

Dave Fogarty 4 miles

The annual Dave Fogarty Race over four miles was held in Thurles on Friday night last and resulted in another fine victory for the in-form Sergiu Ciobanu of Clonliffe Harriers witha time of 19:33. Christy O' Brien of Thurles Crokes came second just ahead of his clubmate Tony Fogarty.Carrick Roadrunners' first finisher was James Fox in 23rd place (23:39), taking second prize in the O-35 category. Cornelius McFadden had a very good run also, finishing 32nd in a time of 24:26.Our third man home was Brian Nugent who clocked 33 minutes, finishing in 97th place.

Our four ladies put in fine runs with Niamh Clifford (30:31) finishing just ahead of Jane Evans (30:49).Jane secured second prize in the O-45 section with this excellent run.Ann Cronin is returning to her best form and clocked in at 31:04 while Susan Collins also ran very well with a time of 40:48. Well done to all our runners.

 

Clashmore '5'

A large field of runners turned out for the latest race in the Ger Wyley Sports/Nike Summer Series in Clashmore on Friday last. John Cleary of Ferrybank AC led the 206 athletes home in a time of 26:04.Philip Harty (West Waterford) took second place ahead of Rory Moloney.Our own Tommy Falconer was 37th with a time of 31:26. Anthony Grace was 43rd (31:51) and Jimmy Power had a good run to finish in 41:00, just in front of our only lady participant, Geraldine Houlihan. Mick O' Shea came home in 41:47 to complete the Carrick quintet.

Ballynonty Summer Series

Tommy Falconer and Ann Cronin made the journey to Ballynonty on Tuesday last for the 2-mile race in their summer series. Tommy came fourth in 11:35 while Ann sped home in 14:38 - very good times from both. They will move up to three miles this week and finish with one -mile relays next week.

Huge Turnout for Rathgormack '5'
The Auto Power Rathgormack 5 mile road race attracted a field of 152 runners and over 60 walkers to the village on Friday evening last.The race was the first of four in this year's Outfield Sports/Asics Three Counties Challenge. In perfect running conditions over this challenging course, Sergiu Ciobanu of Clonliffe Harriers took the men's race with a time of 26:01.Dwane Farrell (Tinryland) came second in 26:24, while third place went to Shane Mullaney (Thurles Crokes).
The ladies' race was won by Pauline Lambe (Tullamore Harriers) in an impressive 29:39 with Madeline Loughnane(Thurles Crokes) second and Corinna Walsh (West Waterford) in third. There was a big turnout Carrick Roadrunners for the race and Daragh Byrne had a great run to be first club person home in 18th position. Anthony Grace and Tommy Falconer were our next finishers while John O' Sullivan made a fine return to race action.Martina O' Dwyer was our first lady finisher in 33:54 ahead of Jackie Power in 35:38 and Mags Power wasfirst lady O-50 clocking an excellent 38:43. Well done to all our runners.

Corl Marathon Teams
Well done to our six relay teams who completed the Cork City Marathon on Bank Holiday Monday. All our runners thoroughly enjoyed the experience and the big-race atmosphere was by all accounts fantastic.Our teams were:

Touraneena 5k
Bank Holiday Monday also saw the running of this year's Touraneena 5k road race, the fourth race of the Ger Wyley Sports/Nike Summer Series. Victory went to Sandis Bralitis of West Waterford AC in 15:21.

Little South Run
The hugely popular Little South Run over 4 miles organised by St. Senan's AC took place in Kilmacow last Sunday. The men's race was won by Sergiu Ciobanu while Lucy Darcy took the ladies' event. Once again our runners were out in force and clocked the following times :

Walls of Fethard 6km
The fourth and final instalment of this year's Tipperary Challenge was the popular four-lap race round the streets of Fethard on Thursday night last. On a perfect evening for running, it was Shane Mullaney of Thurles Crokes who came home first in a very fast 20:01. The ladies' race went to the in-form Siobhan O' Doherty of Borrisokane who clocked 23:11.First Carrick Roadrunner on the night was Tommy Falconer who finished in 12th place (23:28). Brendan Cronin secured third prize in the O-45 category with a fine run, finishing 19th in 24:31.Patrick Roche continued his recent good form in 28th (25:16) with Mark Connolly in 29th (25:19).James Fox was our next finisher in 50th place (26:43). Elaine Walsh was our first lady finisher with a time of 29:06- another good run from one of our fastest improvers.Miriam O' Neill (30:45), Susan Collins (32:57) and Ruth McHale (39:54) put in fine performances also .

Tom Jordan Memorial 5-miles
There was a fantastic turnout of 150 runners and about 50 walkers for the inaugural Tom Jordan Memorial 5-miler in Portlaw last Friday. On a flat, fast course and in beautiful sunshine, Graham Power of Ferrybank AC took first place in the men's race witha time of 26:47 , 12 seconds ahead of Brian Murphy. Danny Smith of Ballynonty (27:04) was a very close third .The ladies' race was won by Madelaine Loughnane of Thurles Crokes in an excellent time of 29:02, ahead of Corinna Walsh (West Waterford AC) and Diane Behan (Waterford AC). Many of our club members turned out for this race and it was James Fox who led our team home , finishing 10th in 29:18.Tommy Falconer came home in 16th place (30:24) while Brendan Cronin's time of 32:04 earned him a place on the Waterford hurling panel as their new 'secret weapon'!!Mags Power had a very good run to take first prize in the ladies' O-50 category. It was also good to see Keith Barry make a very encouraging return to racing while Seamus Ward , Matt Greene and Tara O' Donnell had particularly good runs.Full Carrick Roadrunners' results:

Outfield Sports Three-Counties Challenge
The first of four races in this year's Outield Sports Three-County Challenge is this Friday's Auto Power Rathgormack 5 mile road race at 7:30pm. This year's series boasts an overall prize fund in excess of E6,ooo . To qualify for the series just run any three of the races. There will be a team prize (usual rules) and many spot prizes for each race to ensure lots of interest for all runners.

Poulmucka 8km
The rainclouds disappeared and the sun came out for this year's Poulmucka 8km road race on Friday last.A large field of runners and walkers took advantage of the perfect conditions and lined up for this very well-organised event.It was the in-form Sergio Ciobanu of Clonliffe Harriers who proved fastest on the night in 24:44. Sandis Bralitis of West Waterford AC finshed second and there was an excellent run from David Quigley of Coolquil AC to finish third. A large team of Carrick Roadrunners took the challenge and were led home by Anthony Grace, 15th in 29:18. Next home was James Fox whose 17th place (29:41) earned third prize in the O35 category. Tommy Falconer and Patrick Roche,along with Anthony, secured first prize in the inter-club team category with some excellent running. There were also very good performances from Seamus Ward, Bobby Power and Philip Kelly. Elaine Walsh was our leading lady athlete with a time of 37:27 and won second prize in the ladies' team event along with Ann Cronin and Geraldine Houlihan .Full results of Carrick athletes:

Emer Casey Foundation 10 km
The third running of the Emer Casey 10km race/walk took place in Youghal last Sunday in brilliant sunshine. A huge field,including Sonia O' Sullivan, turned out to support this most worthy cause.Four of our club members took part and all were fulsome in their praise for the course, organisation and atmosphere definitely one to pencl in for 2010! James Fox had another fine run in 37:40, while Paddy Kerwick recorded a PB time of 40:38.Mark Connolly finished in 41:50 while our sole lady runner was Ann Cronin who came home in 53 minutes.

Lions Club

The annual Lions Club walk/jog to Glencomeragh , a distance of six miles, takes place this Wednesday 20th May. The starting point is at the Garda barracks in Carrick at 7pm. Participants can avail of a bus back to Carrick after the run.So why not support a very worthy cause and enjoy the beautiful , scenic route?

Three Counties Challenge
The first of four races in this year's Outfield Sports Three Counties Chalenge will be the Auto Power Rathgormack 5 mile race on Friday, June 5th at 7:30pm.This year's series boasts an overall prize fund in excess of E6,000. To qualify for the overall series, run at least three of the races. There will be a team prize (usual rules) and plenty of spot prizes for each race also.

Portlaw 5-mile Race
The Tom Jordan Memorial 5-mile road race will take place in Portlaw on Friday,29th May at 7pm.Joggers and walkers start at 6:45pm. Registration from 6pm in The Forge Inn. All proceeds of this race go to the Portlaw Red Cross.

John Treacy Classic
The John Treacy Classic 10 mile road race took place on Sunday with 400 athletes lining up beside the Villierstown man, one of this country's greatest ever sportsmen. Many of our club members took the opportunity to compete over the classic distance and it was Tommy Falconer who led the Carrick contingent home in 64th place with a time of 65:41.Martina O' Dwyer was first of our ladies in a speedy 70:23.The full list of our finishers was:

Waterford-Tramore 7.5 mile Race
The latest leg of the Ger Wyley Sports/Nike Summer Series attracted a very large field of athletes to Waterford on Saturday last for the 7.5 mile run to Tramore. The in-form Sandis Bralitis of West Waterford AC once again took the honours with another fantastic run. Our own club was very well represented and there were many excellent performances. James Fox put in a very strong run to finish 27th overall in 45:30. Bulmers Clonmel 10k
The Bulmers 10km road race is always sure to attract a big field and this year was no exception with over 230 stepping up to the startline on Sunday last. The Carrick team of James Fox, Andrew Downey and Brendan Cronin ran very strongly to take second place in the team event.Cornelius McFadden took third prize in the over-40 category while Ann Cronin won the ladies' over-45 event. Orla Power had a terrific run to lead home our ladies in a very fast 43:38.Well done to all our runners on such fine performances over a challenging course. Advice from an Expert
A technical representative from Nike will attend the Fit-4-Life run in Kildalton College , Piltown on Tuesday next,May 19th at 7pm. There will be advice on footwear and samples of running shoes, the most important thing to get right for all runners! All club members are welcome to attend and of course there is no charge.

John Joe Barry 5k
The first of the four races in this year's Tipperary Challenge attracted a field of 108 runners to The Commons on Friday night last.Sandis Bralitis of West Waterford AC continued his impressive form to take this race in a time of 15:27 wih Shane Mullaney of Thurles Crokes in second and Rory McDonnell of Dunboyne in third. Our first Carrick athlete on the night was Anthony Grace in 11th, clocking a time of 17:23. Anthony is certainly maintaning the good form he has shown since the season started. Tommy Falconer showed he is returning to his very best with a time of 18:12 in 16th place. Our third finisher was James Fox in 18th place, another very good run.A ndrew Downey put in a fine effort to dip under the 19-minute mark, while Anthony Power (22:59) and Jimmy Power (23:30) also put in very good performances. Our first lady finisher was Jackie Power in 20:30,continuing a good series of results. Ann Power and Margaret Power were winners of their respective age categories.Ann clocked 22:38 and Mags was not far behind in 23:16.Elaine Walsh (22:52)continues to improve her race times, as does Tara O' Donnell who came home in 23:37.Ann Cronin (24:30) and Onra Power (26:07) also had very good runs on a night when thirteen of our runners took part.

Peak Season
The road-racing season has really hit top gear now and the busy schedule affords runners plenty of opportunities to run over a variety of distances in the coming months.Some of our club members have already been racing regularly and are showing the sort of improvement that only racing can provide.Many are planning to take in the Tipperary Challenge, a series of four races between 5km and 10km run in the month of May. First race is the John Joe Barry 5km Road Race in The Commons on Friday 1st May at 8pm and a big turnout of Carrick runners is expected.

Every Woman 4-mile race
A large contingent of our ladies made the journey to Kilkenny reently for the Every Woman 4-miler.Our first athlete to finish was Martina O' Dwyer in sixth place (26:26), closely followed by Grainne Brennan in 7th (26:47). Jacqui Power and Ann Power were our next finishers in 11th and 16th places. One of our busiest runners, Ger Houlihan,finished 28th in a time of 32:05 while Fit-4-Life co-ordinator,Geraldine Lynch,clocked 34:05 in 42nd. Next club runner home was Carol Kelly in 34:43 and Catherine O' Donovan and Fiona O' Meara crossed the line together in 35:03. There were excellent performances too from Eileen Norris (35:14), Susan Collins (35:50) , Geraldine Brennan (38:52), Mary Conway (39:42) and Una O'Keeffe (41:51). Well done , ladies and keep up the good work!

Butlerstown 10k
The second race of the Ger Wyley Sports/Nike Summer Series saw a huge field line up for the Butlerstown 10k road race on Friday last. Sandis Bralitis of West Waterford AC was a clearcut winner of the men's race.Anthony Grace was our top-placed athlete on the night, finishing in 12th position in a time of 36:43. James Fox was 19th in 37:20 while Tommy Falconer was 43rd in 39:06.There were very good runs also from Brendan Cronin (40:11), Patrick Roche (41:24), Seamus Ward (42:08),Jamie O' Shea (47:27) and Jimmy Power (49:59).
Our ladies turned out in force also and were led home by Martina O' Dwyer in an excellent time of 41:31, proving that the 40-minute barrier is well within her compass. Jacqui Power came home in a brisk 44:27 and continues to run very consistently while her mother,Ann, was not far behind in 48:06. Margaret Power (50:28) ,Ger Houlihan (51:01) , Ann Cronin (52:08), Susan Collins (55:07) and Bernie Sexton (57:03) all had very good performances on the night.

Cork City Marathon
Don't forget that the club plans to enter teams in the relay event at this year's Cork City Marathon on Monday,1st June. The marathon course is divided into five legs of between 3 and 6 miles so everybody can sample the fantastic big-race atmosphere without the pain of running 26 miles! This is an ideal target for anyone training with Fit-4-Life or ,indeed, any other club runners. Just contact Geraldine at 087-2483887 to get your place on a team.

CARRICK LADIES TAKE TEAM BRONZE

Carrick Roadrunners had the honour of hosting this year's County Intermediate Road Races on Sunday last in Ballyneale.Conditions were quite blustery but luckily the rain held off and the fast, flat course produced some impressive times.The action got underway when a large field lined up for the Ladies' race run over 4km.County Novice Champion , Aine Roche (Clonmel) ,produced another great run to complete the double and lead home a clean sweep for Clonmel in the medal positions. Kealey Tideswell and Catherine Rice were the silver and bronze medal winners, making a perfect score of 6 in the team event.Carrick's ladies turned out in force and were led home by Grainne Brennan in 5th and Jackie Power in 6th. Elaine Walsh was our third scorer in 12th place and this secured the team bronze medals for Carrick. It was very encouraging to see ten runners represent the club in this championship race and well done to all!
In the Men's 8km race, it was William Hughes of Thurles Crokes who went one better than last year by taking the gold medal with a fantastic run. Carrick Roadrunners had no fewer than 15 athletes line up and it was Anthony Grace in 8th place overall who led the team home. Our next three finishers were James Fox,Darragh Byrne and Cornelius MacFadden , giving a team total of 63 points- just outside the medals in fourth place. Among our other finishers there were many excellent performances, particularly from Andrew Downey,Brendan Cronin,Barry Torpey and Seamus Ward. A special word of thanks goes to Cornelius MacFadden and all who assisted with stewarding, car-parking and post-race refreshments,making it a highly enjoyable day for all.
