Carraig Hotel 'Deadman's 5'

On a perfect evening for running last Friday 130 runners lined up outside Ormonde Castle in Carrick-on-Suir for the sixth annual Carraig Hotel Deadman's 5 -mile road race. This race was the second in the 2012 Outfield Sports Three-Counties Challenge , a series of four races in the neighbouring counties of Tipperary, Waterford and Kilkenny. As the athletes made their way through Carrick's main street and headed for the challenging Deadman's loop there was already a clear leader in the shape of Ruairi O' Donnell (Limerick AC).Ruairi was never to relinquish this lead and came home well clear of the field in a time of 27:04. There was an outstanding run from junior athlete, Damien Murphy (West Waterford), to take second place overall in 28:29. Damien has only recently completed his Leaving Cert exams and is certainly an athlete we will be hearing a lot more of in the future. Next home was Kevin Coleman (St. Finbarr's AC) who finished in 28:35 with Paudie O' Keeffe (Clonmel AC) taking the third senior prize in 28:50.The team prize went to Clonmel AC. Our first Carrick AC finisher was Daragh Byrne in eighth place overall, clocking 28:30.

The ladies' race also saw a clear winner with the in-form Sylvia Malone (Waterford AC) running a fine race to finish in 31:09. In second position came Aine Roche (Clonmel AC) in 32:40 ahead of her clubmate Mary Molloy (34:42). Carrick AC's ladies were led home by Emer O' Brien (37:05) who took first prize in the O/40 category. Clonmel AC also took the ladies' team prize.

The club would like to thank the Carraig Hotel for their generous sponsorship of this very popular race and also Alan Treacy of Outfield Sports, the overall series sponsor. Thanks also to the residents of the Ash Park area for their co-operation on the night and to Carrick Swan GAA Club for the use of their excellent facilities. As always, we are very grateful to Carrick-on-Suir Red Cross and the local Garda Siochana for ensuring the safety of all. Our sincerest thanks go to the many volunteers who assisted with stewarding, registration and timing on the night. A special word of thanks to Barry Torpey who once again co-ordinated the course marshalling and made sure the course was safe.

The third race in this year's series will be the AutoPower Rathgormack 5 on Friday,13th July at 7:30pm. Registration for this race (entry €10) is available on http://www.runireland.com/.

The first ever Waterford Viking Marathon was held on Saturday last and it proved to be a hugely successful day for Carrick AC athletes. In the main event, the full marathon over 26.2 miles, Brian Murphy led the way home in a fantastic time of 2:38:36. This success comes as no surprise to those who know Brian as his recent training has pointed to a top-level performance. Well done and congratulations from all in the club. Second place went to Frank Quinlan (Waterford AC) in 2:42:08 and third place to Peter Mooney in 2:44:32. The ladies' race was won by Clonmel AC's Angela McCann in 2:57:16.

Carrick AC's Theresa Cunningham has been showing great improvement in her race-times of late and she had her biggest success yet when winning the ladies' half-marathon in a personal best time of 1:31:59. Claire Howlin and Lisa Bartley also completed the half-marathon, finishing together in 2:11:34. To cap off a great day for Carrick AC, Tommy Falconer and Patrick Roche were members of the relay team which finished first over the marathon course. Well done to all our athletes.
