Carraig Hotel 'Deadman's 5'
This year's Outfield Sports/Asics summer series of races came to an exciting conclusion on Friday last with the fourth running of the Carraig Hotel-sponsored 'Deadman's 5'. A field of 165 athletes lined up at our new starting point outside the historic Ormonde Castle before running through the town's main street and joining the usual challenging Deadman's loop.The in-form Sergiu Ciobanu targeted the bonus on offer for a new course record and duly smashed the old record with a superb time of 24:27, also taking first place in the overall series. Brian Kirwan (St. Lawrences) took second place on the night (25:36) while Carrick Roadrunners' Brian Murphy had another excellent run to take third in 26:47.
Madeline Loughnane of Thurles Crokes took the ladies' race in a very fast 29:04 from overall series winner Pauline Lambe (Tullamore Harriers) and Corinna Walsh (West Waterford).
There were many fine performances from our own club's runners, with Gaye Fogarty taking first lady's O/50 prize and Geraldine Houlihan achieving a personal best for 5 miles as she finishes her preparations for the Quebec Marathon in Canada later this month.
We would like to thank the residents of the Ash Park area and the Carrick Swan GAA Club for their co-operation on the night. Carrick Red Cross and the local Garda Siochana ensured the race was run safely and our sincerest thanks also to the many stewards who volunteered for duty, among them our friends in Portlaw Red Cross.Thanks also to Emby Walsh of Carrick AC and to Barry Torpey for laying out the route. The pre-race Asics Roadshow with free gait analysis was a great success thanks to the efforts of Barry Murphy and David O'Riordan of Asics and Des Colbert's chip-timing was another huge success.
