Carrick Road Runners Athletic Club, Co. Tipperary, Ireland

2011 was the club’s sixth year in existence and it was another successful year for us. Over 70 members participated in many races during the year ranging from 5 km to full marathons.

First up was the Tipperary county road races which started in February. In the novice A road race, nine athletes competed with Clare Annan winning silver, while in the novice B, we had just one athlete competing. In the intermediate road race, we had four runners competing with the women earning a bronze team medal. We hosted the Munster masters road race in Ballyneale in March and seven athletes participated with Martina O’Dwyer and Pat O’Sullivan both winning bronze medals and Brendan Cronin winning a medal with the Tipperary county team. In the senior road race in April, we had nine athletes running with Brian Murphy winning the gold medal and the womens team again winning a bronze medal. Brian also won gold at the county 10 mile race in August, and this race also saw the mens team winning a bronze medal.

During the summer months, there was plenty of local races and our own club successfully organised the three county challenge four race series. The club was well represented in these events with many runners achieving excellent times and getting into the prize categories.

In October, the Dublin city marathon was held and the club had five runners competing – our first home was David Waters in just under three hours.

In recent weeks, the Tipperary county cross country races have been held but we have not had any runners competing which is very disappointing given that we have many runners who are capable of winning medals in such events.

A special mention should be given to Martina O’Dwyer who successfully represented Tipperary in both Munster and All-Ireland competitions throughout the year.

In summary, it has been a good year for the club apart from the low numbers at county races and at cross country events. This will need to be worked on next year.

Finally, to all who represented the club in any races during the year – be it county race, cross country, marathon or fun run, I would like to say and big thank you.
