Carraig Hotel Deadman's 5

This year's Outfield Sports Three-Counties Challenge got underway in great style last Friday when 170 runners lined up outside the historic Ormond Castle in Carrick for the fifth running of the Carraig Hotel Deadman's 5 mile race.Running conditions were perfect as the athletes headed through the main street and out onto the challenging Deadman's loop. The men's race was closely contested but it was Carrick AC's Brian Murphy who proved strongest with a great winning time of 25:35.Brian had finished second in this race last year before going on to take victory in the overall series. In going one better this year,Brian became the first Carrick runner to win the 'Deadman's' and has laid down a marker for this year's series.Brian held off a strong challenge from West Waterford's Ravis Zakis and Philip Harty who took second and third prizes respectively.
There were many other outstanding performances from Carrick's men - Pat O' Sullivan was winner in the O/45 category and Brendan Cronin put in a career-best time of 29:48 to take the O/50 prize. Carrick AC's Michael Murphy, David Waters and Tommy Falconer combined to win the team prize.
The ladies' race was won in great style by Siobhan O' Doherty (Borrisokane) in a very fast 28:09.Angela McCann from Clonmel AC was second, just ahead of Waterford AC's Sylvia Malone. Carrick AC's ladies were also to the fore with Martina O' Dwyer winning the O/35 category and Bernie Sexton taking first O/55 prize.
The club would like to thank the Carraig Hotel for their continued sponsorship of this very popular race and also Alan Treacy of Outfield Sports, the overall series sponsor. Thanks also to the residents of the Ash Park area for their co-operation on the night and to Carrick Swan GAA Club for the use of their excellent facilities.Carrick Red Cross and the local Garda Siochana helped ensure that the race was run safely. Our sincerest thanks go to the many volunteers who acted as stewards on the night, among them our friends in Portlaw Red Cross.
The next race in the Three-Counties Challenge will be the Champion Kiely Ballyneale 5k, sponsored by Mr. Binman, on Friday July 1st at 7:30pm.
