Carraig Hotel Deadman's 5mile
Fri 11th June 2010, Carrick on Suir

The first race in this year's Outfield Sports/Asics 3-Counties Challenge was the popular Carraig Hotel Deadman's 5 mile race held in Carrick-on-Suir on June 11th. The series which is organised by Carrick Roadrunners has gone from strength to strength with large fields of athletes lining up for all four races in counties Tipperary, Kilkenny and Waterford in recent years. 191 athletes completed the Deadman's course this year. The race was held in conjunction with the Clancy festival this year which was being celebrated over the weekend. A warm welcome was extended to those who travelled to the festival and took in the race as part of their intinerary for the weekend.

This year's race was won by Sandis Bralitis of West Waterford in 25:51. In second place was Carrick-on-Suir's Brian Murphy, while third place went to Danny Smith of Ballynonty AC. The ladies' race was won by Carrick on Suir's Martina O'Dwyer in 29:52. Second place and third place both went to Clonmel AC - Angela McCann and Aine Roche. The team prizes in both the mens and ladies event went to Carrick on Suir Ac

Starting at the historic Ormonde Castle and taking in the famous Sean Kelly Square and the streets of Carrick on Suir, the race progressed to country roads with an incline on Cregg Road. The course levels off for a bit before turning for the notorius Deadman's boreen for a few challenging climbs before levelling off for a fast finish. A nice but challenging course on this warm June night. Forty eight runners from Carrick on Suir AC ran on the night, a superb turnout for the first race in the series. Well done to the Fit4Life group on completing the race - Rhona Boland, Maura O'Neill, Michelle Foley, Jane Foley, Stacey Foley, Melanie Ward and Aine O'Keeffe. This is a super achievement for these athletes who have only recently embarked on their new running careers - keep it up girls!

The race was kindly sponsored by the Carraig Hotel again this year, a note of thanks for the use of the hotel facilities for the post race refreshments and prize giving. Thanks to the Swan club for their continued support in the use of the hall for registration and changing facilities. Thanks to the Red Cross for their assisstance and to all stewards who helped on the night without whom the event would be impossible to hold. Thanks to Aoife Conway for the delicious chocolate cookies, much appreciated by all runners at the finish line. A note of thanks also to the club members who looked after registration and results on the night. Also, thank you to the folk from Asics who carried out gait analysis on the night and also for theirs and Outfield Sports continued support of the Three Counties Challenge.

Next up is the Champion Keily 5K in Ballyneal in Friday 02 July at 7.30pm
