Carrick Road Runners Athletic Club Notes 28th July 2008

Friday 8th August next at 7:30 p.m. sees the 4th and final race in this year's Outfield Sports/Asics 3 Counties Challenge Series-The Carraig Hotel Deadman's 5. This is the 3rd running of this race and since its inception in 2006 it has been a popular event in the local athletics scene. Race HQ is Swan Sports and Recreation Centre (by kind permission) adjacent to Carrick-on-Suir Garda Station with registration opening at 6 p.m. on the evening of the event. Entry Fee is €8 and prizes for all of the usual categories are on offer as well as many spot prizes. T-shirts will be available to all of those who have completed at least 3 out of the 4 races.

The now infamous route takes the runners from the start close to Collins Park via Ard Mhuire, Cregg Road, Deadmans Boreen (hence the name), Ballyrichard and on to the finish at Ashe Park where a large crowd of spectators is expected as usual. There are a number of favourites for this year's event including course record holder Sandis Bralitis of West Waterford who posted his record time of 25:06 in 2006. Sandis will face challenges from Clubmate and last year's winner Ravis Zakis as well as the in form Sergiu Turea who is in contention for this year's series after taking top spot in Ballyneale and Piltown. The local challenge will come from our very own Pat O'Sullivan who is just getting back to form. Look out for Shane Mullaney (Thurles Crokes) and John Cleary (Ferrybank AC) who will also be looking for that elusive top spot.

There is one outright favourite for the ladies race in the shape of West Waterford's Corinna Walsh however St. Senan's Adele Walsh, as well as West Waterford's Diane Behan along with a strong Clonmel challenge will not make it easy for Corina. A number of our own ladies are also performing well of late and both Martina O'Dwyer and Mary Molloy will certainly be challenging for one of the prize positions.

Series
In the ladies overall series Corina Walsh has an unassailable lead and cannot be beaten. The men's competition is down to two for the overall league. Sergiu Turea of Clonliffe Harriers and Ravis Zakis are both still in with a chance so it will be down to the wire on the night. The full league tables will be available after the race.

Prizes
The prize ceremony for both the race and the league will take place in the Carraig Hotel immediately after the race. Great prizes are on offer for all the winners and a great night is guaranteed so don't miss it.
