SuperValu Winter League

Now in its eighth year, the SuperValu Winter League over the 5km course in Kildalton College, Piltown, is once again attracting runners of all levels in large numbers. Tuesday evening last saw the first 5km run using the handicap system, with the fastest runners from the previous week starting last. There was a total of 106 finishers on a perfect evening for running. The first runner to finish was James Quigley who clocked a time of 24:41. Derek Walsh and Ann Dineen were the next two home, just ahead of David Hannon and Maura O' Neill. The fastest time on the night was the 16:38 recorded by Patrick Roche, while Martina O' Dwyer and Claire Annan were the first two ladies with times of 17:52 and 17:55 respectively. Over the course of the next nine weeks the league table will become clear as many runners will achieve significant improvements on their times. Prizes will be awarded to the most improved runners over the ten weeks. The first group will start their run at 7 pm sharp each week and will be followed at two-minute intervals by each of the other groups. Runners are asked to run on their right-hand side at all times and to wear a reflective bib while on the course. Always remember to wear your number on the front of your singlet/bib and to remain in single file while passing through the finish tunnel. Full results for Week 2 and starting times for Week 3 can be viewed at http://www.carrickroadrunners.ie/

Cork to Cobh 15-miles

The annual 15-mile road race from Cork to Cobh has become a very popular prep-race for runners who intend participating in the Dublin City Marathon. This year's event saw more than 650 runners take part with victory going to Alan O' Shea in a time of 1:21:25. Two Carrick AC athletes who are well on target with their training for Dublin recorded very good times also. Tommy Falconer, who will make his marathon debut in Dublin, came home in 1:36:48. Experienced marathoner, Andrew Downey, finished in 1:37:10. The club would like to wish Andrew, Tommy and our other marathon entrants the best of luck on Bank Holiday Monday in Dublin.

Solas 10-miles

Over 1,600 runners, joggers and walkers completed the 10-mile course in this year's Solas Run in Waterford on Sunday last, helping to raise funds for the Solas Centre. Carrick AC's Brian Murphy led the way home in a very impressive 51:14. Our next finisher was James Fox in 63:34 while Seamus and Melanie Ward finished in 65:20 and 84:42 as they prepare for the Dublin City Marathon. Well done to all our runners.
