Record Turnout for MorrisOil.ie Piltown 10k

The annual MorrisOil.ie 10k road race in Piltown attracted its largest ever field of runners on Friday evening last when 192 runners completed the course. This was a significant increase on last year's entry of 161 and continued the trend of increased participation in this year's Outfield Sports Three-Counties Challenge. In fact, record entries were seen in three of the four races in the 2012 series as the Challenge goes from strength to strength. The Piltown area avoided the very worst of the heavy showers on Friday and conditions were good for running. From the start in Kildalton College, Donore Harriers runner, Philip Harty, made his intentions very clear as he quickly built up a commanding lead.Indeed, as the field left the college grounds after about a mile and a half Philip's lead already looked unassailable. He maintained his relentless pace all the way to the new race finish in Piltown GAA club grounds, finishing in 31:50, two minutes clear of second-placed Andrew Connick (FerrybankAC). Andrew was closely followed by Limerick AC's Ruairi O' Donnell who had been victorious in the recent Deadman's '5' in Carrick-on-Suir. In the ladies' race Borrisokane's Siobhan O'Doherty showed what a great talent she is by taking a clear win in 36:00 and finishing in fourth place overall, less than a minute behind the third-placed man. Second lady to finish was Angela McCann (Clonmel AC) in 37:11 with Dymphna Ryan (Dundrum AC) in third place. The men's team prize was won by Carrick AC and the ladies' prize went to Kilkenny City Harriers. Carrick AC's first finisher was sixth-placed Patrick Roche who recorded a time of 36:07 while Emer O' Brien led home the Carrick ladies in 46:28. The winner of the overall series prize is junior athlete, Damien Murphy from West Waterford AC who finished second at the Deadman's '5' and seventh in the Rathgormack 5 before again finishing seventh in Piltown. This was a great achievement for such a young runner and Damien's name is one we will no doubt be hearing a lot more of over the coming years.
Carrick AC would like to thank all who helped to make this year's race such an outstanding success. Thanks to the many stewards who helped to ensure the safety of all runners, to Carrick-on-Suir Red Cross for their invaluable assistance and to all who helped at race registration, timing and results. The club is once again very grateful to Piltown GAA club for the use of their excellent facilities and particularly for the new race finish which met with approval from all the runners. Thanks also to Kildalton Horticultural College for the use of the college grounds which provide such a scenic start to the race. Morris Oil's sponsorship of this race for the past six years has been hugely important to the success of the event and the club is very grateful for this continued support.
